John Nelson Barrus Sr., 88, of 1012 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, Md., passed away, Saturday, July 18, 2009, at the Golden Living Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born Sunday, Oct. 24, 1920, in Medina, N.Y., he was the son of the late Nelson B. Barrus and the late Blanche Isabel Raymond Barrus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Ellen Barrus in 1999.

He was employed with Reynolds & Reynolds Printing Co., retiring in 1987 after 16 years of service. He later was employed with the Washington County Parks Board as a security guard at Black Rock Park. He was a member of Calvary Grace Brethren Church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force 392nd Bomb Group 577th Squadron. He was a member of VFW Post 1936.


He is survived by his daughter, Lynda C. Andrews of Tonawanda, N.Y.; one son, John N. Barrus Jr. of Tonawanda, N.Y.; a sister, Dorothy Pask of Tonawanda, N.Y.; one brother, Winston R. Barrus of Buffalo, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Grant W. Barrus, and a brother, Lynn M. Barrus.

Services will be held Thursday, July 23, 2009, at 10 a.m., at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Md., with the Rev. Douglas A. Courter officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 22.

Interment will be at the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, Md.
