BOONSBORO - Lionel John "Old Granddad" Zierdt, 62, of Boonsboro, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 19, 2009, surrounded by his family, after a lengthy illness.

Born on Jan. 31, 1947, in Washington, D.C., he was preceded in death by his parents, Lionel Justus and Effie Marie Zierdt.

He was a mechanic for all his life. When they could, before their various health issues, he loved to work on vehicles with his son and brother.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Delores Jean Lavely Zierdt; one daughter, Melissa Marie Zierdt and husband Wesley of Hagerstown; one son, Lionel Justus Zierdt and wife Kimberly of Boonsboro; one brother, George "Tommy" Zierdt of Winchester, Va.; one niece, Erin Zierdt of Baltimore; one great-nephew, Jason Zierdt of Baltimore; three grandchildren, Richard Smith Jr., Jeannie Walker and Holly Testerman; five great-grandchildren, Krystyna Smith, Katlyn Smith, Skylar Testerman, Lexus Testerman and Maya Testerman; and two lovable puppies, Joan and Shadow.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 23, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville, Md. At 7 p.m., a celebration of remembrance of Lionel's life will begin at the funeral home.
