MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Paul G. Zwior, 65, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, in Berlin, Md.

Born Aug. 25, 1943, in New Brunswick, N.J., he was the son of the late Paul F. and Kunigunde Schatz Zwior.

Graduating from Bound Brook High School, Bound Brook, N.J., in 1961, Paul lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He was a 1965 graduate of Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va., with a BA in secondary education, majoring in physical education, with a minor in history. Paul was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

He taught school for 33 years in the Berkeley County School District, during which time he met his beloved Carolyn, and they were married on July 29, 1967.


Paul began his PGA apprenticeship in 1965, when he was working part-time as an assistant professional at Martinsburg Country Club for head PGA professional Henri van Gogh. From 1966 to 1968, Paul organized and coached the golf team at Musselman High School. On March 1, 1969 he went to work full-time as an assistant to head PGA professional Rick Caudill at Martinsburg Country Club.

On Jan. 1, 1970, Paul was selected to be Martinsburg Country Club's head professional, where he remained until March 1, 1983. Martinsburg Country Club became Martinsburg Golf and Country Club, then Opequon Country Club, and finally today is known as Stonebridge Golf Club. He was elected to PGA membership on March 1, 1973. Paul once again became the head PGA professional at Opequon Country Club on April 1, 1985.

On May 1, 1993, Paul semi-retired when he became a life member of the PGA of America. In March of 1997, Stonebridge Golf Club asked Paul to once again assume the head PGA professional position, which he did until the end of October that year, when he again reverted to PGA life member status.

Paul was elected to the Quarter Century Club of the PGA in March of 1998. He continued to teach golf lessons part time at Stonebridge Golf Club until his sudden death.

In a PGA resum, Paul listed oil painting as one of his hobbies.

Paul is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carolyn Clohan Zwior; one brother, J. Wolfgang Zwior and his wife Phyllis of Bridgewater, N.J.; sister-in-law Colleen and her husband Mitchell Masker of Martinsburg; brother-in-law Jack C. Clohan Jr. of Clarksburg, W.Va.; niece Amy Kayes and husband Henry; nephews Todd Masker and wife Lisa, and Jack "Trey" Clohan III; and two great-nieces, Meredith and Caroline Kayes.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 23, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, with Pastor Jeff McLeod presiding. Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home.
