SMITHSFIELD, N.C. -- Patricia Ann Stephenson Bundy, 70, of Smithfield, N.C., died on Sunday, July 19, 2009, following an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Lowell Bundy, and parents, Howard and Ruth Stephenson.

Mrs. Bundy is survived by a daughter, Linda Fisher and husband Ray of Westlake, Ohio; two grandchildren, Benjamin and Mary, and a son, Jonathan Lowell Bundy of Raleigh, N.C.; four sisters, Callie Jones and Janice Southerland of Smithfield, Dorothy Parker of Four Oaks and Becky Renfrow of Davis, N.C.; and one brother, Dewey Howard Stephenson Jr. of Four Oaks, N.C. She was a cherished aunt of three nieces and eight nephews.

In 1956, she graduated from Smithfield High School as the valedictorian of her class and received an AB degree in history and political science from Women's College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for graduate study in political science at the University of Illinois. She was an active member in the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown, Md.


After raising a family, she was employed for 25 years as controller with the ARC of Washington County Inc. in Hagerstown. She retired and returned home to Smithfield and worked as finance manager at the Johnston County Council of Aging.

Known for her compassion, kindness and gifted scholastic abilities, she touched her family and those around her in a special way. The family wises to express sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Morris Cancer Center at Duke and Johnston Medical Center.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma, N.C. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. The family will gather at her home, 1008 S. Crescent Drive, Smithfield.
