Mail Call

July 21, 2009

"As I look at this farce on TV about this judgeship, isn't this the way all these governments are run? They all know she's going to be put in, so why go to all this expense and TV coverage? It's about like everything in this world."

- Boonsboro

"You know, I was just telling my wife, I was only 90 percent complete before I got married. Now I'm finished."

- Sharpsburg

"It's good to see Obama and his cronies/czars are taxing the very people that they have become. If we tax the people who have achieved the American dream, it turns into the American nightmare."

- Dargan

"I've never called Mail Call before, but after reading the comments from the caller who blows cigarette smoke in people's faces, I felt I had to respond. I support your right to smoke, but did it ever occur to you that some of us have reactions to your smoke? Some of us get painful migraines. Some, you could cause an asthma attack, etc. Please, by all means, smoke all you want, but do it in a considerate manner."

"I am reading the newspaper on the City Council considering carry-in alcohol for some businesses. It really upsets me that the council doesn't pay any attention to our chief of police on things that he brings in, as far as safety."

- Hagerstown

"I read where NASA is making available a high-def Hollywood production of the original poor-quality video of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The original was lost or stolen, or erased, the article said. I hope the new one will show stars in the black sky, and get the shadows right."

- Hedgesville, W.Va.

"I took all my proper paperwork down to Department of Assessment and Taxation, and they filled out everything and they even mailed it down to Baltimore for me - or faxed it down, and I still got denied. I came to conclusion if you're not from Baltimore or Baltimore County, you aren't going to get anything from the State of Maryland."

- Halfway

"Our nation is in the shape it is in because of the citizens' lack of realizing the consequences of their decisions, and then blaming others for the consequences that came because of their bad decision."

- Hagerstown

"It's Friday, July 17. I just came from Calvert County, Md., and the price of gas there today in the various stations was $2.169 to $2.199. I wonder why there's such a big differential between Calvert County and Washington County, other than the hundred miles. How about a good investigating reporter?"

- Hagerstown

"I would think the restaurants in Hagerstown who have to obtain a liquor license before they can serve alcohol would be upset at the city allowing smaller restaurants to have carry-in bottles."

- Hagerstown

"We have just been around Hagerstown today, and we see the police station, the Alexander Hotel, different places here in Hagerstown, made or reused, recycled buildings. They're talking about doing the same thing to the armory. Now, if this is possible, why do we have to build a new senior citizens center ... Washington County, without going out to the college, which most seniors will probably not go to?"

- Hagerstown

"I know some people are nice out there, but I wish some people would have a little bit more respect toward the physically disabled. I happened to be out grocery shopping over the weekend. I was trying to reach some produce, and I heard this woman with her daughter complaining about how I was in the way. Lady, maybe if you offered to help me, since I couldn't reach - and I was not in your way, and people like you need to be thankful and be thoughtful."

- Hagerstown

"After working for 60 hours, I decided to give myself a break. So being it's Saturday, I watched movies all day long. And my one question I'd like to ask is why, when it seems like everybody on these shows gets into a situation that needs straightened out, the first thing they do is head for the booze bottle, which only makes matters worse?"

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I'm watching this show on the National Geographic channel about the death penalty in Texas, how they're trying to abolish it. I don't believe they should abolish the death penalty. I think the only problem with the death penalty is the U.S. doesn't use it enough. The murderer doesn't think about the feelings of his victims when he's killing the victims, so why should we have any feelings for them, for what they did? I think they deserve everything they get."

- Hagerstown

"I am not a smoker. Restaurants and clubs should have smoking areas. Nonsmokers can eat at other restaurants. Smokers should not have to stand on the street and drop cigarettes on the street."

- Williamsport

"This is for the caller from Frederick who asked how much a dentist should charge for a filling. I am a senior citizen, and recently had some minor surgery at the hospital. I was charged over $1,300, but Medicare approved $350, and the surgeon accepted this as full payment. This is less than a third of his charge. Now I was recently quoted $224 for a filling."

- Hagerstown
