Korean War Veterans elect new commander

July 20, 2009

Antietam Chapter 312 of the Korean War Veterans Association began its second year July 1 by electing officers for the 2009-10 year.

They are as follows:

  • Wayne B. Winebrenner -- commander

  • Jim Ensminger -- vice commander

  • Ned Renner -- second vice commander

  • Les Bishop -- secretary

  • Don Smith -- treasurer

  • Pat Patterson -- sergeant at arms

  • Clayton Burkholder -- historian

  • Wayne Taylor -- temporary chaplain

The elected officers were installed in their positions in a brief ceremony following the election.

The chapter's membership includes veterans from Hagerstown and the surrounding area.

The chapter was charted in 2007 with 34 members and has grown to more than 50 members. It meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. at AMVETS Post 10 on Frederick Street.

The chapter is an active group and the new commander would like to start some new programs, including an educational program for middle school-aged children, a monument commemorating all Washington County Korean War veterans and establishing a scholarship fund for grandchildren of Korean War veterans.

The chapter is sponsoring a display at the Washington County Free Library, which runs until July 27. The display chronicles the war years from 1950 to 1953 with photographs and narrative, as well as memorabilia.
