Mid-Atlantic Senior Amateur

Only one golfer managed to play at par Monday in the opening round of the 63rd Middle Atlantic Senior Amateur at Fountain Head Country Club, and the top two in the field represent the same club.

Ben Brundred III shot a 35-36 for an even-par 71 to grab a one-stroke lead over Pat Tallent, who shot a 35-37. Both players play out of Congressional Country Club.

Fountain Head member Dick Roulette was in a tie for 17th following a 40-37-77. Beaver Creek's Tim Steiner was tied in 22nd with a 40-38-78 and Ira Pearlman, also from Beaver Creek, shot a 39-42-81.


The Senior Amateur continues this morning with the second of three rounds.

Schultz, Lampard fall short of defending Pro-Am title

HAMPSTEAD, Md. -- The Beaver Creek Country Club tandem of professional Dirk Schultz and amateur Ken Lampard were unable to defend their title in the 53rd annual Pro-Am Championship, conducted by the Maryland State Golf Association.

Playing at Piney Branch Golf Club, Schultz-Lampard carded a 4-under-par 67 in a round that included six birdies and a pair of bogeys.

The Piney Branch duo of pro Greg Kohr and amateur Gary Awalt were in the first pairing of the day and recorded a 6-under 65 that included a string of five birdies from holes 13 through 17 that stood up the entire day.

Fountain Head was represented by two duos. Pro Jim Schouller and amateur Paul Mellott shot a 1-under 70 for a tie in 22nd, and pro Brian Boggs and amateur Ric Behan had a 4-over 75 for 40th. The Schouller-Mellott team had an eagle on the par-5 14th, measuring 500 yards.

Brunswick Orioles 7, Hagerstown Braves 6

SMITHSBURG -- The Brunswick Orioles (22-8) swept the best-of-5 semifinal series against the Hagerstown Braves (16-15) in three games with a win in the third game on Monday.

The Orioles won Game 1 10-0 in five innings on Saturday, then edged the Braves 7-6 in Game 2 on Sunday.
