Historic Pa. church to hold special service

July 20, 2009

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. -- The Friends of Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church will hold a summer service at Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church near Warfordsburg on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Pastor John Godissart of McConnellsburg United Methodist Church will officiate, with the United Methodist Church Choir leading congregational hymn singing.

Tonoloway is the oldest church in Fulton County, Pa., and the 10th oldest Baptist church in the United States.  Signatures written on the walls of the church by Union troops hospitalized there during Stonewall Jackson's bombardment of Hancock can still be seen.  Tonoloway is on Thompson Road (Pa. 655) in Fulton County, about two miles north of Hancock.

Friends of Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to restore and preserve the Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church building as a historic site and a place of worship.  Services are held at the church twice yearly.
