KNOXVILLE, Md. -- Betty Putman Wellen, 76, of Knoxville, Md., died peacefully with her family by her bedside Thursday, July 16, 2009, at North Hampton Manor Inc.

Born Aug. 5, 1932, in Frederick, Md., she was the daughter of the late Lester and Viola Putman.

She was a loving and devoted wife of 34 years to Robert G. Wellen.

She loved animals, planting trees, flower gardening and especially feeding wild birds, her cats and various stray animals. She loved watching football, especially the Washington Redskins.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, Robert G. Wellen, are two sons, George N. Benoit Jr. and wife, Irene, of Frederick, and Gary L. Benoit and wife, Sharon, of Knoxville; seven grandchildren, Anna, Jared and Ira Benoit, all of Frederick, Sarah Loraw and husband, Mark, of Surprise, Ariz., Corey Benoit of Knoxville, Cassie Kitler of Keedysville, Md., and Alan Tarwater of Germantown, Md.; four great-grandchildren, Mikaela Benoit, Cecilia Loraw, Hailey Grant and Kieran Kitler; four sisters, Frances Wilkins, Kathy Cioffi and Susan Rizzo, all of Frederick, and Dorothy Bailey and husband, Philip, of Bushwood, Md.; two brothers, Lester Putman of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ralph Putman and wife, Carol, of Urbana, Md.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by one brother, Louis Putman; and one sister, Carol Benton.

The family will receive friends and family Tuesday, July 21, 2009, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. 15 N., Frederick, with a memorial service at 2 p.m. Committal services will follow at the grave site. The Rev. Samuel Martz will lead the services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA and/or Frederick County Humane Society.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody P.A., Frederick.
