What Do You Think?

Editor's note: Each week, The Herald-Mail invites readers to answer poll questions on its Web site, Readers also may submit comments about the poll question when voting. Each Sunday, a sampling of edited reader comments will run in The Herald-Mail.

Last week there were two poll questions.

The first question was: Would you buy a car from the new General Motors?

"No thanks. It won't be long before the government is telling GM what kind of cars to build rather than the consumer."

"Will GM product line change and make cars that people want to own? If the government expects consumers to buy 'smart cars' for American highways, forget about it."

"No, I would not, even though plenty of my tax dollars were wasted to try and keep GM afloat. I thought the experts said we couldn't let them fail? The laugh is on us, the stupid taxpayer!"

"Corvettes, Cadillacs, Malibus, Silverados, some SUVs - all have good reputations. If the price is right, the warranty is long, Consumer Reports rating is high, then I would buy a GM car in a second."

"No way, no how, no more! I have over $3,800 in credit card rebate points on my GM Card, which I plan to throw away. I will have nothing to do with GM. The union via Obama has stolen this fine American company."

The second question was: Should Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor be confirmed?

"We already have enough worthless legislators in Washington. We certainly don't need another self-acclaimed legislator on the bench. She is not a judge of the law. She is an activist lawmaker from the bench.

"'First, as Professor Martha Minnow has noted, there can never be a universal definition of wise. Second, I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life.' - Sotomayor. Umm ... I have a few questions: What would CNN do had a white male conservative said something like this? Does being a nonwhite Democrat make it OK? How is it that the Democrats have racism immunity? And does Obama's spiritual mentor ring a disturbing bell?"

"I would love to see the Republicans try to stop the confirmation of Judge Sotomayor. The verbal abuse by (Sean) Hannity is just great! Thanks for helping all the minorities in the U.S. to continue to support the only party that cares for them - Democrats. Keep up the lies and misleading facts. You are only making it better for us liberals. Thank you so very much."

"Should Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor be confirmed? As long as Judge Sonia Sotomayor can be honest and use the facts as written in the case, so be it. When our 'Constitution' becomes up for debate and interpretation then pass her confirmation. Wow, this is not a liberal or conservative issue. It is a concern for all the 'American' people. I laugh at the glass boundaries the liberals place around themselves. One day, instead of standing in the snow globe looking out, you might consider looking in from the outside. The view is indeed brighter."

"I'm not commenting on whether she should be confirmed or not because I don't feel that I know enough to form an educated opinion. I just want to say that I have heard a lot of media (left and right) talk about how her judgments will be swayed by her opinions. Well, here's the way I look at it: Our opinions are swayed by our beliefs, which are swayed by our values, all of which make up who we are. How is it possible to not have your judgments swayed by the very core of what makes you YOU? And why is it OK to have your judgments swayed by your faith in God, but not by your life experience?"
