Toddler falls in W.Va. swimming pool

July 16, 2009

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- A 3-year-old boy fell Thursday afternoon into a swimming pool in the Conestoga Estates subdivision off W.Va. 230, according to a rescue official.

The boy made his way from a front yard to the backyard, where the pool was, said Ed Smith, a manager for the Jefferson County Ambulance Authority.

The boy's mother found the boy in the pool and rescued him, Smith said.

When rescue officials arrived about 3:30 p.m., the boy was not breathing and did not have a pulse, but he regained his pulse by the time he arrived at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va., Smith said.

The boy was flown to a children's medical center, although Smith did not know which one. Smith said the boy still was alive as of 6:15 p.m.

Young children who are involved in such accidents have to be closely monitored for several days because medical problems can arise, Smith said.
