Mail Call

July 16, 2009

"I received a phone call, and they told me you've been selected to win this prize, and if you don't win the big prize, you can win this or that or something else. Then, they asked me a bunch of questions, and the last question they asked me was about my income; was it within this limit, that limit or another limit. And when I told them that it wasn't as high as the first limit, 'Oh well, you're not eligible.'"

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Now I wonder what the tax protesters think, now they got their property tax bills. I saw the comments in the paper. You know, the federal income tax take is the lowest it's been since 1967. But I'm like a couple other Mail Callers; my taxes went up like 300 and some dollars, even though my property is down probably 40 percent. You know, you should have been in front of the county administration building protesting."

"My comment I have is I'm considering why the mayor of the town is now spending more taxpayers' money installing playground equipment on the half-mile walking trail that no one uses to start with. In a financial economy that we have, it's amazing that money is being wasted in this way."

- Smithsburg area

"The use of security cameras in schools: Where are they allowed, why are they allowed, and are they only allowed to cover hallways, stairwells or inside classrooms? What can they do? I'm not quite sure what this is all about."

- Hagerstown

"How much longer before our elected representatives investigate the price of gouging on gas pricing in the state of Maryland? The oil prices have fallen drastically in the last two weeks, yet price of gas remains the same. How come?"

- Washington County

"The Greencastle caller who infers that a charity concert performed by Michael Jackson makes him as much a hero as our military can't be serious. Placing MJ on the same pedestal as those who sacrifice their very lives for our country suggests a warped set of values. Jackson's concert in the 1980s was a self-centered exhibition to gain exposure."

- Hagerstown

"The only people who seem to know what is being voted on are the people doing the voting - at least, I hope they know. I am not against immigrants, I am against illegal immigrants, and there is a difference. So my question is: Is this new system for American citizens or for anyone who walks through the door?"

- Hagerstown

"Maybe I missed it, but did anyone have a suggestion to block unsolicited text message ads? This is so annoying, and wastes my time and minutes."

- Hancock

"To Boonsboro, who thinks Obama is the best: When Obama gets cap-and- trade, national health care and amnesty to illegals passed, you just as well have one foot in the grave. The people just making it will become homeless, the average will become poor. ... The above programs will create many problems."

- Rohrersville

"You know, I'm hearing where this Sarah Palin's complaining about being criticized every day for - since she ran for the vice presidency. Well, God bless her, she doesn't realize that these right-wingers, especially talk show hosts, have been criticizing crude things about Obama since he started running for president of the U.S. and saying real bad things about him."

- Hagerstown

"I'm sitting here reading Monday's paper, 'County to buy land.' This is on taxes. 'County to buy land near local airport.' So they raise people's assessment taxes, which should be going down, not up, because the value of your house is down. ... I think it's time for the state to take over all assessments on houses through the state of Maryland."

- Hagerstown

"If any of us would walk off our jobs for five days without telling anyone, we would be fired. If any of us in a management or position of authority would do that, as well as not telling anyone where to get in touch with us, we would be fired. The same should happen to the governor of South Carolina."

- Washington County

"Due to the fact that I'm formerly from McConnellsburg, but concerning an article that ran in your paper a week or two ago concerning groundbreaking for a new addition to the McConnellsburg hospital, I mean, I feel that they could have put this money to better use. I mean, after all, JLG is the main employer in McConnellsburg, and they were having layoffs."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"When Al Seacrist took care of the city golf course, the greens were always green. Now, they have all kinds of equipment to treat the greens, and they are terrible. That's hard to figure out."

- Hagerstown

"To the person who called in from Halfway, saying everybody has a nose: Boy, that's true, and you know what I don't like? All these women that dress up in all these expensive clothes, hairdressing, hair spray, makeup. ... What's the point? Why can't they be satisfied with the way God made them?"
