Ag Expo offers high-flying action

July 16, 2009|By JULIE E. GREENE

High-flying motocross riders and jet-powered ATVs are joining the entertainment options at this year's Washington County Ag Expo & Fair.

Mike Vaters, who drives the Black Stallion monster truck, is bringing his Vaters Motorsport Thrill Show to the fair and to his home county for the first time.

The Ag Expo & Fair begins Friday and runs through Thursday, July 23, the night of Vaters' show.

Four motocross riders will compete in freestyle motocross, doing jumps and tricks as they compete against one another, said Vaters, who lives in the Downsville area. His son, Mike Vaters II, will compete in the event.

The show also will feature Vaters' two 1,500-horsepower, jet-powered ATVs, Kamikaze and Psycho. They shoot flames out the back, which will burn a car. The two ATVs also will have a push war, going nose to nose with the engines thrusting them against one another, Vaters said.

The third element of the show is hopped-up riding lawn mowers that will race around the dirt track. Some of the racing mowers have two-cylinder Briggs & Stratton engines with as much as 120 horsepower compared with 20 horsepower on a good-sized regular riding mower, Vaters said. The racing mowers could reach 40 to 50 mph on the track.

The other evening entertainment during the weeklong fair includes carnival rides, bull riding, a demolition derby, a tug-of-war, tractor and truck pulls, and contemporary Christian praise and worship bands.
