Schultz finishes 4th in Open

July 15, 2009

PHOENIX, Md. -- Beaver Creek professional Dirk Schultz carded a 3-under-par 68 on Wednesday in the final round of the 88th Maryland Open championship to finish in fourth place.

Schultz, who shot 74-72 in the first two rounds, was one of four golfers who shot 3 under in the final round -- the only players to break par on the day. Schultz finished the tournament at 1-over 214, four strokes behind Rolling Road's Matthew Bassler, who carded an even-par 71 in the final round for a 210 total.

Had it not been for an array of bogeys in the first round and two costly holes on Wednesday, Schultz may have mounted an even greater challenge.

After a pair of birdies through the first four holes Wednesday, Schultz had a bogey on the fifth and a double bogey on the sixth. He rebounded with a string of three birdies starting at the eighth, had another at 15 and finished the round 35-33.

Schultz also has finished second in four other Maryland Open appearances, including 1999 at Hillendale, which played this year at 6,839 yards.

Brent Martin, of Breton Bay, was second and Jim Estes, of Olney Park, was third.
