DAVIS, W.Va. - W. Elliott Ours, 74, of Davis, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at his daughter's residence in Shenandoah Junction, W.Va.

He was born Dec. 2, 1934, in Clarksburg, W.Va., and was the son of the late Willis E. Ours and Marguerite Fleming Ours.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Davis and a former member of St. James Lutheran Church in Uvilla, W.Va.

Mr. Ours graduated from Thomas High School in 1952, enlisted in the Army in 1953, and was discharged in 1956.

He married Margot Benthien of Luebeck, Germany, on April 14, 1957, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Clarksburg, W.Va.

He graduated from West Virginia University in 1961 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, and was employed by the Federal Communications Commission as a field engineer in 1961, at the Detroit field office.

In 1968, the family moved to the Washington, D.C., area, and he retired in 1989 as chief of the enforcement division.

Mr. Ours was very interested in the Canaan Valley/Tucker County history, and was co-author of "Behold! The Land of Canaan." He was a member and former president of The Friends of the 500th Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margot M. Ours of Davis; one daughter, Michele King and husband, Pat, of Shenandoah Junction; one son, Tom Ours and wife, Cindy, of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; one half brother, Robert A. Ours of Baton Rouge, La.; two grandchildren, Andrew King and Anna Kate Ours; and sister-in law and brother-in-law, Renate and George Wilson of La Vergne, Tenn.

Memorial services will be held Friday, July 17, 2009, at 2 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Uvilla, with Hospice Chaplain Luz Maiuri officiating.

Graveside services will be Friday, July 24, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thomas, W.Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Friends of the 500th, TCHHEP, P.O. Box 422, Davis WV 26260; or to Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg WV 25403.

Local arrangements are by Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, Charles Town/Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
