"For all the churches in our surrounding area who display messages on their marquees: Kudos. We all need to read more of those positive, soul-searching messages. Keep up the good work and thank you."

- Hagerstown

"We went to the Antietam battlefield fireworks for the first time. The music was great, the fireworks were great. There was just too many introductions and speeches, and too much marketing of Washington County, Md."

- Hagerstown

"This is in reference to the person who wrote about nonsmokers being affected by someone's smoke. The respectful thing to do is for the smoker to move elsewhere. Well, then, we could, but the nonsmoker could also move somewhere else, too."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"The biggest complainers of Obama's doing as he pleases, no regard to the Constitution, are his voters, who never researched his background nor found out that 'shared wealth' is Marxism, not capitalism. Can't say he didn't warn you."

"I'm writing in response to the person who feels removing Leonard Pitts' column from our paper would be a loss for thoughtful readers. Removing Mr. Pitts' column would actually be a loss for the thoughtless readers who fall for his propaganda and are easily swayed by his radical racial, political and religious ideas that he so forcefully pushes in his columns. Mr. Pitts' columns are not informative. ... It's well past Mr. Pitts' time to go."

- Hagerstown

"Just returned from a trip to the South. Down in Tennessee, a seven-bedroom, three-bathroom house is taxed at a rate of only $800 per year. Gas in Tennessee is $2.28 a gallon, gas in Virginia is $2.31 a gallon. What's wrong with Hagerstown and Washington County? Our taxes are more and our gas is more. Someone's being gouged."

- Hagerstown

"We had a great concert last night at the Hagerstown Community College amphitheater, free and open to the public, by the Air Force Band of Flight. We had about 700 people there. We got good advance notices in The Herald-Mail; however, there was no one there to cover the event. We saw nothing in today's paper, and it's the second-largest crowd we've had in five years. I encourage everyone to come out to the free concerts."

- Hagerstown

"In the last year, the Republicans have lost everything but their name. But don't worry because they do lead in one category. A recent survey shows that in the last 20 years, there have been 29 senators, congressmen and presidents who have cheated on their wives. Out of that survey, 12 were Democrats and 17 were Republicans. So Republicans do win at something."

- Hagerstown

"The people that are writing in about how much time Obama's taken off on vacation all the time, and they talk about how much time Bush took. Well, let's remember, good old Obama was supposed to change all that. He was in for changing everything. Well, the only thing he's changed is the fact that we're getting taxed more and we're gonna be in bad shape."

- Halfway

"If you're tired of hearing something on the radio, whether it's conservative or a different kind of music, just turn the dial. It's that easy."

- Hagerstown

"You know, here in the Halfway area of Hagerstown, the lights, especially here on Roessner Avenue, are on 24/7. Now, the residents of Roessner Avenue pay their taxes, in their taxes is the price of these lights. So why is it the county has to have them on for 24 hours a day, seven days a week? Shut them off during daylight. Save yourself a little bit of money on taxes."

- Hagerstown

"Simple economics, lesson one. Millions of American families are struggling and suffering due to unemployment, reduced hours and wages. Millions of illegal aliens are flouting our laws by working in this country. You don't need a degree in economics to see the answer."

- Smithsburg

"Once again, we're seeing where the Barbara Ingram School and all of the other schools are going to either be renovated, updated or constructed. Nobody seems to remember Bester - Bester Elementary. They need attention. They need a new school. Come on, people, make some noise. BOE, what are you looking at? Pay attention. Bester needs it now."

- Washington County

"It's amazing how crude oil has dropped around $14 a barrel in the past two weeks, but gas prices haven't changed at all. Hmm, who do we blame for this? Bush? Don't think so."

- Hagerstown

"'Tis the season: Beware of those driveway scammers who knock on your door, pressuring you to have your driveway sealed on the spot for a cheap price. Chances are the price is actually more and the sealer watered down. ... Some also get you to sign on the spot for paving work. Take your time."

- Washington County

"You know, I sit and listen to these Republican congressmen and senators down there, and when Obama administration brings up things that they're passing for the good of the people, Republicans are saying no, no, no, but they want to come up with a better idea, but the only thing is, where were they for the last eight years that they could have brought up these ideas?"

- Hagerstown
