Area Roundup -- Schultz makes cut at Maryland Open

PHOENIX, Md. -- Beaver Creek professional Dirk Schultz carded a 1-over-par 72 on Tuesday to make the cut after the second round of the 88th Maryland Open at Hillendale Country Club.

Schultz had three bogeys and two birdies on his card and made the cut tied for 15th at 4-over 146.

Co-leaders heading into today's final round are Brent Martin, of Breton Bay Golf Club, and Gary Mankulish Jr., of Lakewood Country Club. Each are at 4-under 138. Martin shot a tournament-low 66 on Tuesday.

There were 42 players who made the cut for the final round.

Four other area golfers did not make the cut. Ken Lampard finished at 74-150, Brian Boggs had a 77-152, Jim Schouller had a 77-154 and Greg Henry had an 81-155.

Weber wins Yingling's Qualifier

Zach Weber shot a 3-under-par 51 to win the WACO Junior Golf Yingling's Qualifier No. 4 by 10 shots over Scot Drury and Kyle Huntzberry, who tied for second.

Weber took the lead in the Player of the Year standings with 454 points, 14 ahead of Chris Bushey.

Hole-in-one, double-eagle made at Black Rock

Bob Irvin of Frederick, Md., aced the 17th hole at Black Rock, a 120-yard par 3, using an 8-iron on Tuesday. It's Irvin's first ace in 25 years playing. Hank Hesse witnessed the ace.

John Moller of Hagerstown double-eagled the first hole, a 465-yard par 5, using a 5-iron from 178 yards on his second shot. It's Moller's first double-eagle in 20 years playing. Jason Fauble, Rod Campbell and Chris Mumma were witnesses.

Sun for a Day contest

The Hagerstown Suns have announced the "Hagerstown Sun for a Day" contest, giving fans the chance to nominate someone in the community who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in order to help them out.

"We're looking for people in the Hagerstown area who first of all love baseball, and secondly have shown a willingness to do that little bit extra for someone else," said Suns president and general manager Bob Flannery. "The Suns work very hard to provide unsurpassed customer service, and really this contest is to honor the people who show a similar ethic."

The Suns will take applicants for the contest starting today, and the winner will be announced on Aug. 10th.
