Howard William Gilbert Jr., 77, of 13031 Hawkins Circle, Hagerstown, Md., died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at his home.

Born Dec. 10, 1931, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Howard William Gilbert Sr. and Miriam King Gilbert.

He was a 1949 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1953, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi Omega. He graduated with a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1961.

He served two enlistments in the U.S. Air Force.

He was a senior partner in the law firm of Mackley, Gilbert and Marks for 35 years.

He was a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, where he was a member of the Committee of Torts and Workers Compensation. He was a member of the Washington County Bar Association, where he was secretary, 1967-1970, and president in 1978.

He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he was an ordained elder and trustee.

He was a member and Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League. He was a member of the U.S. Tennis Association. He played clarinet and saxophone in the University of Maryland Band and the Washington Redskins Band. He also played in other bands and orchestras in the Washington, D.C., area. He sang in local church choirs and the St. Patrick's chorale.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Nofziger Gilbert and the mother of his children, Lillian Gilbert, both of Hagerstown; two daughters, Betty K. Swenson of Edentown, N.J., Linda Wyble of Tampa, Fla., and three stepdaughters, Cynthia Nofziger of Seattle, Wash., Betsy Nofziger of Rockbridge, Ohio, and Susan Nofziger of Boulder, Colo.; two sons, Wayne Gilbert of Hagerstown, Scott Gilbert of Seattle, and one stepson, Tom Nofziger of Mill Valley, Calif.; a sister, Margaret Somervell of Middlebury, Conn.; a brother, Paul King Gilbert of Willow Street, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1183 Green Hill Drive, Hagerstown. The Rev. Renee Mackey will officiate. The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment services will be held at Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery at a later date.
