Joseph Allen Forsythe, 62, of Antietam Drive, Hagerstown, Md., died after a long illness Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 23, 1947, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clayton and Doris Whitmore Forsythe.

He was a longtime employee with Vincent Groh.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, 1966-68, serving in the Army 25th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He was a member of the American Legion Morris Frock Post 42, AMVETS Post 10, Goodwill Athletic Club, Life member of VFW Post 1936, serving as past commander and past District III commander, Eagles 694 and Vietnam Veterans, Chambersburg.


He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Lillian Loretta Forsythe; two daughters, Melissa Hughes Wilhelmi of Hagerstown and Michele Willoughby of Waynesboro, Pa.; a son, Joseph Forsythe of Hagerstown; a stepdaughter, Kim Green of Kingsport, Tenn.; two stepsons, Steven Green of Tallahassee, Fla., and Jimmy Scarlett III of Hagerstown; two brothers, Donald Forsythe of Hagerstown and Butch Myers of Greencastle, Pa.; two sisters, Bonnie Ridenour of Indiana and Mary Rieff of Hagerstown; 10 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and two faithful companions, Zach and Bubs.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Forsythe; a sister, Connie Forsythe; a grandson, Gerald Hughes; and a granddaughter, Linda Evans Willoughby.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at VFW Post 1936, 70 E. Washington St., Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. Memories will be shared at 6 p.m.

A service will be held at Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery at a later date.

The family has requested the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Lillian Forsythe.
