Mail Call

July 13, 2009

"I'm glad to see such a wonderful turnout at Hagerstown Community College on Tuesday evening for the wonderful rendition by the Air Force Band. If you missed it, you missed a good program. Thank you ... for continuing to furnish good music for our community."

- Hagerstown

"This is to the older lady that was driving the red Thunderbird on Eastern Boulevard on Tuesday, July 7. I gave a description of your car to the young lady's car that you smashed in the side of and took off. I told her your first three numbers on your license plate were VFW, but I didn't catch the rest of it. I think it was wrong for you to go and leave her sitting there with her car all smashed up."

- Hagerstown

"I'm 14. On July 1, you published a comment from someone who said that the United States should keep borrowing from China and let our kids and grandchildren pay the bill. We're not the ones who (messed) up the economy. ... Why should we be left to clean up our elders' stupid mistakes?"

"I see on page 8, national news, 'Obama officials urge Senate action on climate.' He had four of the departments talk to the Senate panel to get them to pass this energy bill. I hope the Senate isn't like the House and pass this stupid thing because it's really gonna hurt the people. The county and city in Hagerstown just raised their assessment ... on houses, which they should fire every one of them."

- Hagerstown

"Same politicians who lied to us about funding Social Security and Medicare are the same ones who are now trumpeting free universal health care. So if they can't straighten out Social Security, you think they're gonna give us free universal health care? That'll be a bigger mess than what we got now."

- Sharpsburg

"If nonsmokers are being affected by someone's smoke, the nonsmokers need to stay at home, away from the smokers. Us smokers have had all of our rights taken away from us, and we support America by buying cigarettes. That puts a lot of money into America. So nonsmokers, if you don't like the smoke being blown in your face, stay at home because I make it a point to blow smoke at everybody's faces."

- Hagerstown

"This is in reference to the smokers, comments that's been in the paper about blowing smoke in people's faces. I'm a nonsmoker, have been all my life, but it doesn't bother me when someone smokes around me. If it does, I get up and move rather than cause a disturbance. These people who smoke have rights, too. They're people, they're not low-lifes, the majority of them had a habit that started years and years ago when it was cool to smoke."

- Hagerstown

"I really resent not being to able to watch TV. I pay $85 a month for cable, and I pay $36 for three months of newspapers, and I cannot read the newspaper and I cannot watch the TV because all that is on it is Michael Jackson, and I really resent that, and I'm thinking very seriously about canceling everything. I resent not being able to watch something else besides Michael Jackson."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"This is to all you complainers out there about President Bush always on vacation in Crawford (Texas), at his ranch. So ridiculous - he was always on duty most of the time. That man hardly ever took a true vacation. It was the same way when he would be at Camp David."

- Hagerstown

"OK, let me be the first to say Michael Jackson was a (heck) of an entertainer, but the way the media treated his death, I mean, come on. 'Dateline NBC' - well, NBC says it all, two nights in a row; Michael Jackson, '20/20'; Michael Jackson, CNN, MSNBC, that's all they have is Michael Jackson. OK, the funeral's over, I hope that's it because they're forgetting about our heroes, eight Americans that were killed the other day in Afghanistan. They're forgetting all about the economy."

- Williamsport

"Like it or not, Spanish is gaining ground. My doctor chats with patients in Spanish, it's spoken with all business calls, added to all labels and directions. Now, I see Chambersburg and Waynesboro police departments are caving in to the language. I don't like it, but adios, English. Why learn English when you don't have to?"

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Once again, there are people in Mail Call complaining about a cigarette smoker at the city concert. We also had to move, but not because of the smoker. Remember this: Everybody has a nose, and two ladies and a gentleman standing around us reeked so strongly of cologne, hair dressing, hairspray, makeup, so on and so forth, my nose ran and my eyes swelled shut. Remember this: Everybody has a nose."

- Halfway

"People on Social Security disability are allowed to work and still get their Social Security disability. They can work a little bit and still get their Social Security disability. And anyways, Social Security disability is a lot different from SSI. If you get Social Security disability, you can spend your money whatever you want to spend it on. ... Social Security disability is for people that worked and paid it in, so they get it back when they can't work anymore."

- Hagerstown

"Once again, Joe Biden shows why he fared so well in the presidential primaries. Isn't it great the anointed one chose him as his vice president? You just can't make this stuff up."

- Maugansville

"The 'TEA' in the TEA Parties stands for 'Taxed Enough Already,' yet unless you make over $250,000 a year, you got a tax cut this year. Do the partyers know this? Are they out there because they make a lot of money and didn't get a tax cut - or are they out there because Rush Limbaugh and his ilk told them to go out there?"

- Hagerstown
