Nonprofit legislative group honors Shank

July 13, 2009

The American Legislative Exchange Council is honoring Maryland Del. Christopher B. Shank, R-Washington, with a Legislator of the Year award.

Shank will receive the award at the ALEC's annual meeting on Friday in Atlanta.

Shank is one of nine people who will get the award this year, ALEC spokesman Jorge Amselle said Monday.

ALEC is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., that promotes limited government, free markets, federalism and individual liberty.

Shank, a Republican, represents Boonsboro, and other southern and eastern portions of Washington County. The House minority whip is in his third term.

In a news release, ALEC said Shank supported the nonprofit organization by introducing a Transparency in Lawsuits Protection Act, an ALEC model bill.

He has spoken before ALEC's Civil Justice Task Force and at its Disorder in the Court Workshop, and serves on the Civil Justice Task Force Executive Committee, the news release says.

Nearly 1,500 state legislators and business leaders are expected to attend ALEC's annual meeting in Atlanta, the group said.
