Sleep Inn opens in Clear Spring

CLEAR SPRING -- Ever since Whitetail Resort was built near Mercersburg, Pa., rumors have swirled around Clear Spring about the inevitability of a motel catering to skiers being built there.

Now that rumor is a reality in the form of a three-story motel with 79 rooms off Md. 68 just behind the town's McDonald's restaurant.

Jo Ann Rankin, general manager of the Sleep Inn, said the doors opened June 24. An official grand opening is scheduled for Aug. 4 from 1 to 5 p.m. featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which is expected to be attended by state and local officials.

"It's just like a ski resort," Rankin said, remarking on the winter sports motif.

There also are 17 paintings by Clear Spring artist Cindy Downs on display throughout the motel.

A double-sided fireplace separates the ski lounge from the dining room. There is also a full lobby, a boardroom for 18 people and an area outside for ski storage.

Rooms have 32-inch televisions, in-room safes, microwaves, refrigerators, hair dryers and ironing boards. There also is a guest laundry on the second floor, Rankin said.

An indoor pool, spa and fitness center are also available to patrons.

A continental breakfast that includes Belgian waffles is available, as are snack and beverage machines.

"For additional food service, we can provide catering," Rankin said.

Off-season rates are $89.99 for a room and $109.99 for a suite. During the ski season -- November through March -- those rates are increased by $20 each, Rankin said.

The Sleep Inn has 12 employees, Rankin said.

"Our patrons have been very pleased," Rankin said.

All the customer-satisfaction forms have included 10s, the highest rating.

Built by Callas Contractors Inc., the motel is owned by Houck Hotel Partner LLC.
