W.Va. man suspected in bank robbery back in Washington County

HAGERSTOWN -- A Martinsburg, W.Va., man charged in a June 26 robbery of M&T Bank at the Centre at Hagerstown has been returned to Washington County.

Bobby Gene Shelly, 33, of 28 Fletcher Court, is charged with robbery and theft over $500, according to police and court records.

Shelly was being held Monday at the Washington County Detention Center on $300,000 bond, according to court records and a jail spokesman.

Shelly was taken into custody July 2 at his Martinsburg home, police said. He waived extradition and was returned to Washington County.

A preliminary hearing for Shelly has been scheduled for Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. in Washington County District Court, according to court records.

The bank at 17724 Garland Groh Blvd. was robbed by a man who handed a teller a note demanding cash. After he received the money, the robber fled on foot across the parking lot toward Wal-Mart, police said.

A weapon was displayed in the robbery, police said.
