What Do You Think?

July 13, 2009

Editor's note: Each week, The Herald-Mail invites readers to answer poll questions on its Web site, Readers also may submit comments about the poll question when voting. Each Sunday, a sampling of edited reader comments will run in The Herald-Mail.

Last week there were two poll questions. The first question was: Do you think Maryland's fireworks law, which prohibits fireworks that explode, shoot into the air or travel along the ground, is too strict?

  • "How about the government just order us all to stay home July 4th weekend so that no one dies in car wrecks?"

  • "Based upon my experience of having lived many years in states and countries where fireworks are legal, both as a kid and adult, I feel that the fireworks laws are way too strict. In fact, more people are injured or maimed jogging each year than are injured by fireworks in this country."

The second question was: What do you think are the ramifications of Sarah Palin's decision to step down as Alaska's governor before the end of her term?

  • "There's no way this can benefit her. She has been continuously chastised following the election, so her stock has dropped since then anyway. Now, there's little or no way to put a positive spin on this or even negate the damage done. ... I don't know if she would have had much of a future in politics outside of Alaska anyway ... now, it's all but gone."

  • "It sure looks like Sarah Palin wants very little to do with politics any longer. Enough making fun of her and her children already."

  • "Good Old Sarah in the spotlight again. Wonder what her next move is - well, not really. I'm sure she'll get calls from all over wanting her to do a story, book and interviews."

  • "It will hurt her political career if you consider that only some folks will contribute to any future campaigns she might enter. Of course, she won't get elected, but some ignorant folks will give her money and vote for her. As others have written, every second-term president is a lame duck and many governors have term limits and they are also lame ducks."

  • "Stick a fork in her, she's done. ... Now, she has the chance to cash in big time and she is not going to let a commitment she made to the citizens of Alaska stand in her way. She is a quitter."
