Woman killed in I-81 accident

July 12, 2009

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- The driver of a Jeep Cherokee who was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday on Interstate 81 south of the Dry Run Road exit was identified as Roberta L. Braithwaite, according to Berkeley County Sheriff Kenny Lemaster.

Braithwaite, 37, of Martinsburg, was driving south on the interstate about 3 a.m. when the Jeep hit a guardrail in the center median, the sheriff's department said in a press release.

While attempting to make a U-turn back onto the interstate, Braithwaite was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer, police said.

Braithwaite was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The interstate was closed for about three hours after the crash, and traffic was detoured through Martinsburg.

Lemaster said it is unclear what caused Braithwaite to lose control of the Jeep.
