MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Martinsburg (W.Va.) graduate Brandon King made his professional baseball debut on Thursday in the Florida Gulf Coast League.
King, who signed with the Washington Nationals, started and went the first two innings in a 7-4 Nationals win over the GCL Cardinals.
The right-hander allowed two hits, struck out five and walked none.

Thornton to play at Fairmont
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Isaac Thornton, The Herald-Mail's 2008-09 Boys Basketball Player of the Year who led Martinsburg to the West Virginia Class AAA state title this year, has accepted a full scholarship to play basketball at Fairmont State University.
The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 18.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 3.4 assists per game as a senior and finished his career with 1,302 points. He sank two free throws with 5 seconds remaining in the state championship game to lift the Bulldogs to a 53-52 victory over South Charleston.
