Anniversary



Second Christian Church, at 65 W. North St., will celebrate Pastor Jacquelyn Dixon's first anniversary Sunday during the 10 a.m. service.

Elder Cordell, from Great Commission Ministry in Waynesboro, Pa., will deliver the message. The Spiritual Warriors from the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va., will perform. The choir was on hand for Pastor Dixon's installation.

A meal will be held following the morning services.

Musical presentation



Trinity Lutheran Church, at 15 Randolph Ave. at the corner of North Potomac Street and Randolph Avenue, will offer a musical presentation Sunday, July 19, during the 9:45 a.m. service.

An ensemble of 15 area musicians from various churches will present secular songs with a theological theme including the song "Full Force Gale," by Van Morrison. The music will be part of a service with the message being presented by Pastor Eric Norgard.

The public is welcome on Sunday morning to the contemporary praise worship service at 9:45 a.m. or an evangelical service at 8:30 a.m.

Off-street parking is available in the church's lot. Free child care is provided for children younger than 5.

Diabetes class



The Walnut Street Community Health Center will hold a free diabetes education workshop Thursday, July 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. This session is titled "Monitoring and Health Maintenance."

The last session in the series will be held Aug. 27. It is titled "Goal Setting and Working with Your Doctor."

Book club



The Sisters in Spirit Book Club members have been reading some exciting books and the next two months promise to be the same.

Book titles will be given in advance for future book discussions. Ladetra Robinson is accepting book titles so start sending in the titles of books you want to read and or discuss.

The July 26 discussion will be on "Dreams from My Father" by President Barack Obama.

On Aug. 24, the discussion will be on "Killer Chameleon" by Chassie West.

Barbecue planned at Asbury Church

Asbury United Methodist Church, at 155 Jonathan St., will hold a barbecue Saturday, July 18, from 11 a.m. until sold out. The cost is $8.

Pool open



The swimming pool at Memorial Recreation Center is open on a limited basis. The pool is open Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is $2 for those ages 7 and older. Those 6 and younger will be admitted free.

Movie



Don't forget the Bridge of Life Church, at 14 S. Potomac St., will show "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," Saturday at 7 p.m. on a big projection screen with surround sound.

Free popcorn and free sodas will be available for movie watchers.

VBS



Haven Lutheran Church will hold a Vacation Bible school July 27 to 31 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The theme is "Crocodile Dock." The event will include bible stories, songs and games.

A light supper will be served at 5:45 p.m. before the program starts at 6:15 p.m.
