Martin's 2 HRs, 7 RBIs power West End

MAUGANSVILLE -- Airin Martin had two home runs and seven RBIs as West End beat Maugansville 16-5 on Thursday in the Maryland District 1 11-12 Tournament.

"I told the kids to be aggressive today -- get their licks," West End manager Bill Nutter said.

Martin's three-run homer in the top of the first gave his team a quick 3-0 lead, and his towering grand slam over the fence in the center field highlighted West End's five-run second.

West End added three more runs in the third off three hits, a walk and an error to extend the lead to 11-0.

Maugansville finally got on the board in the bottom of the third, collecting four runs off four hits to cut its deficit to 11-4.


West End brought another run in with the bases loaded in the fourth, as Brady Nutter came in from third on a walk.

Maugansville scored its final run in the bottom of the inning, when Jake Clemmer scored his second run of the game after he walked, took second on a single and came home on a throwing error.

Maugansville had five runs on six hits, and missed several scoring opportunities, stranding eight runners on the night.

West End tacked on another four runs in the sixth, getting a two-run homer from Brady Nutter.

West End will host Sharpsburg on Monday at 6 p.m. Maugansville will play today at 6 p.m. in Clear Spring.
