Elwood "Woody" Tingle, 90, of 9723 Chapelwood Lane, Hagerstown, Md., died on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Ravenwood Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 18, 1918, in Lewes, Del., he was the son of the late Joseph and Cornelia Long Tingle.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army.

He was employed by Schindel-Rohrer as a salesman, and by McCrory's (downtown) for 30 years.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

He was a 32nd degree Mason with Friendship Lodge No. 84; the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., USA; Tall Cedars of Lebanon No. 95; Hagerstown Shriner's Club; Hillbilly Club; B.P.O.Elks No. 378; and the Funkstown American Legion Post 211.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Susan Tingle; one son, Norman "Woodie" Tingle, and his wife, Barbara, of Hagerstown; one sister, Catherine (Kitty) Griffith of Seaford, Del.; and two grandchildren, Bryan Tingle and Anneke Tingle.


He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mildred Geyer, Elsie Marvel and Betty Tingle; and five brothers, Earl Tingle, George Tingle, Russell Tingle, Granville Tingle and Louis Tingle.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Edward H. Heim will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 8 p. m.

A Masonic memorial service will be held Thursday at 6 p.m.

In lieu of traditional funeral arrangements, the family requests that small individual flower arrangements be sent to the funeral home. Following the funeral service these arrangements will be distributed to the residents at Ravenwood Nursing Home.
