Business set to lease Fleetwood building

HANCOCK -- The Hancock Town Council voted 3-0 Wednesday to authorize the town to enter into a lease agreement with Hoffman Joinery Inc., the company that agreed in March to be the first tenant in the former Fleetwood Travel Trailers building.

If Hoffman Joinery owner Chris Hoffman agrees to the terms of the lease, his company could be operating out of the Fleetwood building by Aug. 1, Hancock Mayor Daniel A. Murphy said.

The company, which makes high-end cabinets, is moving to the Fleetwood building from its current Main Street location to allow for expansion, Murphy said.

The company will rent 7,000 square feet, a small portion of the more than 125,000-square-foot facility at 35 South St. that the town bought in July 2008 with a donation from a wealthy former resident.

The lease involves tiered rent rates that start at $2 per square foot and go up to $3.50 per square foot over time, though the tenant can avoid rent increases if he hires a certain number of employees, town manager David Smith said.

Hoffman plans to have eight employees within three years, Murphy said.

"It's a small fish, but it's a first fish," Murphy said.

The town is seeking additional tenants for the building, which it hopes to turn into an industrial park to boost the town's economy.

Hancock Councilman Sinclair Hamilton was absent from Wednesday's council meeting.
