SHARPSBURG -- It was a game of give and take for South Mountain and Sharpsburg on Wednesday.

Sharpsburg did much of its taking in the first inning, grabbing a 7-0 lead on the way to a 13-7 win over South Mountain in the opening round of the Maryland District 1 11-12 All-Star Tournament.

It didn't take long for Sharpsburg to claim the lead. Luke Harsh led off the bottom of the first with a first-pitch single straight up the middle, then scored from first on a double by Dalton Stewart.

"My single felt good," Harsh said. "Then we started scoring all those runs and it felt really good."

Two batters later, Ashton Binkley drilled a three-run homer to center for a 4-0 lead. Sharpsburg scored their next three runs off a double, two walks and an error.

South Mountain failed to answer in the first three innings, getting only one hit and drawing only one walk.

Alex Wetzel led off the bottom of the third with a solo shot that brought the Sharpsburg lead to 8-0.

South Mountain cut the lead in half with four runs in the fourth off five hits, two errors and a groundout. But Sharpsburg answered with two runs in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by Binkley and an RBI double from Jared Cline.

South Mountain tacked on two more in the fifth. Nathan Saunders hit a bouncer through a drawn-in infield that brought in a runner from third before another scored as a result of a two-runner rundown that left the infield dazed.

Harsh hit a two-run homer for Sharpsburg in the fifth. Colin Dove hit a towering solo shot for South Mountain in the sixth.

"The defensive plays were made," said Sharpsburg coach Ronnie Stewart. "We answered every run."

Sharpsburg will host National tonight at 6. South Mountain hosts the Conococheague-Valley loser on Friday.
