CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Mrs. Helen H. (Helfrick) Bumbaugh, 77, a resident of Menno Haven Retirement Community, Chambersburg, formerly of 40 Phillips Ave., Waynesboro, Pa., died at 5:15 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2009, at the nursing home.

Born Dec. 11, 1931, in Leitersburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Mary (Lizor) Helfrick. She spent her early life in Greencastle, Pa.

Mrs. Bumbaugh attended Greencastle-area schools.

She and her husband, John H. Bumbaugh, were married May 15, 1957, in Cearfoss, Md. They lived at their Phillips Avenue, Waynesboro, address for over 40 years before moving to Menno Village four years ago.


Mrs. Bumbaugh met her husband while working as a mail carrier at Frick Co., Waynesboro. She later sold Avon and spent her time as a homemaker.

She was a member of Church of the Brethren, Waynesboro, where she served on the hospitality committee. She also attended Calvary Assembly of God Church, Waynesboro.

In her younger years, she enjoyed singing gospel music with her sisters, sewing, knitting and crafting.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Judith Dunahugh and her husband, Curtis, of Ringgold, Md., Susan Keller and her husband, Roy, of Waynesboro, and Harriet Sandy and her husband, Donald, of Smithsburg, Md.; one granddaughter, Erica Dunahugh; four grandsons, Jason Keller, Shaun Dunahugh, Corey Dunahugh and Ethan Sandy; one great-grandson, Clay Dunahugh; three sisters, Betty J. McPherson of Westminster, Md., LaRue Kriner of Dearborn, Michigan, and Kathleen McLucas of Falling Waters, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mildred Clark, Lovella Barnhart and Isabelle Henry; infant sister, Margaret Susan Helfrick; and three brothers, Russell Helfrick, Isaac Helfrick and Richard Helfrick.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle.
