Smithsburg Town Council OKs bikes for police

July 07, 2009

SMITHSBURG -- Smithsburg Town Council members on Tuesday night gave Smithsburg Police Chief George L. Knight Jr. permission to purchase two bicycles for police patrols in town.

Knight said he favors a specially designed bike that sells for $699, and features custom shock absorbers and a light.

Knight said the bikes could be used to patrol in areas like Whispering Hills.

Council members also gave Knight the authority to obtain a Yamaha Rhino utility vehicle, which can be used to patrol off-road areas and respond to emergencies in remote areas.

Yamaha offers Rhinos to police departments for a year with the option to purchase them, Knight said.
