Byron Lovell "Obie" Oberholzer, 83, of Hagerstown, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2009, at C.J.'s Senior Care.

Born Nov. 20, 1925, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Lester A. and Lula M. (Lovell) Oberholzer.

Byron was raised as a Lutheran.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII.

He retired from the Washington County Board of Education and had also worked for the Western Maryland Railroad.

He was a member of the Alastia Club, Hagerstown AMVETS Post No. 10 and American Legion Post No. 211. He also was an avid bowler.

He is survived by his wife, Ida Lane Oberholzer; a daughter, P. Louise Murnighan of Virginia Beach, Va.; two stepsons, David Divelbliss of Hagerstown and Larry A. Lane of Clear Spring; a brother, Donald J. Oberholzer of Greencastle; and several stepgrandchildren.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first and second wives, Helen Louise (Davis) Oberholzer and Betty (Walling) Oberholzer; and a brother, Charles L. Oberholzer.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Josue Sanchez officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors conducted by Hagerstown AMVETS Post No. 10 and the Marine Corps League.

Friends will be received Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
