What Do You Think?

July 06, 2009

Editor's note: Each week, The Herald-Mail invites readers of the Opinion page to answer a poll question at www.herald-mail.com. Readers also may submit comments about the poll question when voting. Each Monday, a sampling of edited reader comments will run in The Herald-Mail.

The next Opinion poll question will run on Wednesday's Opinion page.

Last week's question was: How much do you think the Washington County Commissioners' plan to upgrade the intersection of Dual Highway and Edgewood Drive will help alleviate traffic problems on Robinwood Drive?

Here's what some of the voters had to say:

o "The Washington County Commissioners have a plan? Really? Get outahere! A plan? Our commissioners? This is major, major, major news."

o "It will help some, but the volume of traffic is the biggest problem, with people blocked in at certain intersections and the college and medical center emptying at the same time. There is also a big growth factor with new places to eat and more people moving in houses and apartments."

o "The volume of traffic per se is not the problem. The lack of lateral conveyance is the problem. That is, there's no side roads. That's because Hagerstown (and the rest of Washington County) does not plan, then annex. They annex, then plan. And I use the word 'plan' in the most loosely interpreted sense of the word. The only thing I can figure is that some friend of a commissioner or council person (now possibly long since dead) never got the monetary offer that he or she figured was just desserts for a right of way or lateral road. My memory goes back to 1985, when there was still a farm stand and a silo at the corner of Edgewood Drive and Dual Highway (U.S.) 40. HCC was just getting started, and the Robinwood medical extravaganza was but a twinkle in some venture capitalist's eye. Anybody and everybody who used that intersection in 1985 was aware that major improvements to the situation were an absolute requirement. But elections come and go, and elected fools did what elected fools do: Nothing."

o "I feel that the congestion on (U.S.) 40 and Robinwood (Drive) will not be alleviated until Robinwood is made a four-lane street, at least past the college. Yes, we need extra turn lanes on both streets, but we also need the additional lanes."
