Air Force Band to perform at HCC

July 06, 2009

The Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association will host the U.S. Air Force Band of Flight as part of its annual Red, White and Blue Summer Concert Series on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in HCC's Alumni Amphitheater.

One of the oldest Air Force bands, the Band of Flight was first activated in 1942 as the 361st Army Air Force Band in Patterson Field, Ohio, on what later become known as the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The band was renamed the Air Force Band of Flight in 1991.

Today, the band consists of 60 active-duty musicians assigned to two specialized performing groups: the Concert Band and the Night Flight Jazz Ensemble. Under the direction of Maj. R. Michael Mench, the Concert Band is the largest single ensemble within the band and is comprised of 45 members. The Concert Band performs a diverse repertoire of music, that includes original band compositions and orchestral transcriptions, popular Broadway and show tunes, marches and patriotic selections.
