Movies off the beaten path

July 03, 2009|By ABIGAIL YEAGER / Special to The Herald-Mail

Tired of the same old movie-watching routine? Take your eyes off the mall movie marquee and check out the films being shown outdoors or in unexpected places this summer.

In Chambersburg, Pa., The Capitol Theatre shows a series of classic movies. In Martinsburg, W.Va., there's Music & Movies on Main, a program of Main Street Martinsburg.

"We are trying to revitalize downtown and draw attention there," said Mark Jordan, who handles public relations for Main Street Martinsburg. "We are just trying to reach out to anybody. It is just a fun time for the family, something to do for free."

Bridge of Life Church in Hagerstown is offering movies on alternating Saturdays as a way of reaching out to the community.

"We asked ourselves 'What can we do to help the neighborhood have family time, especially with the economic crisis the way it is?'" said Jim Davies, a pastor at Bridge of Life. "If you have a couple kids, (movies) get really expensive."

Many of the offbeat places show family-oriented movies, such as "Cars" or "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," so the available movies can also be used for family fun or even a date night. Many outdoor movies are free too, which is a plus in today's economy.

So grab the family and head out for a movie under the stars.
