Howard Wilmer Poffenberger, 86, of Hagerstown, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at his home.

Born on Aug. 18, 1922, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Alexander Brown and Myrtle May (Grams) Poffenberger.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He retired after many years with the City of Hagerstown.

Howard was a member of the Funkstown American Legion Post No. 211 and the Hagerstown VFW Post No. 10.

He is survived by a daughter, Donna L. Beard of Hagerstown; a brother, Gerald D. Poffenberger and wife Polly of Williamsport; a granddaughter, Kelly L. Garvin of Hagerstown; a grandson, Scott Poffenberger of Georgia; four great-grandchildren, Alex G. Garvin and Sydney M. Garvin, both of Hagerstown, Samantha Poffenberger and Andrew Poffenberger, both of Georgia; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Howard W. Poffenberger Jr. and a sister, Thelma Bennett.


Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received one hour before the service at the funeral home.
