Area roundup -- Schultz misses shot at PGA

July 02, 2009

SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. -- Dirk Schultz had put himself in a favorable position for a top-20 finish after nine holes of the PGA Professional National Championship final round on Wednesday.

The Beaver Creek professional finished his front nine at 1-under par and was 2-under for the tournament, good for a 16th-place tie.

But things began to cave in on Schultz on the back nine. After a par on the 10th, he had consecutive bogeys over the next three holes, another on the 15th and then a double bogey on the 16th. He ended with a 41 on the back nine and a 4-over 75 for the day on the 7,450-yard Twin Warriors Club course.

He finished in a tie for 40th place. The top 20 finishers qualified for the PGA Championship in August at Hazeltine National Golf Bluc in Chaska, Minn.
