Area roundup -- Schultz sets sights on PGA Championship berth

June 30, 2009

GOLF

SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. -- Dirk Schultz has never played in the PGA Championship. He is one solid round of golf away from getting the opportunity.

The Beaver Creek professional carded a 1-under-par 70 on Tuesday in the third round of the 42nd PGA Professional National Championship, leaving him in a tie for 19th place after three rounds at 211.

The top 20 players qualify for the PGA Championship, to be played at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., from Aug. 13-16.

"I am playing real well," said Schultz after his round. "Tee shots are the thing here. The ball flies like crazy."

The final two rounds of the PNC are being played on the 7,500-yard Twin Warriors Club course at an altitude nearly one mile above sea level.

When Schultz tees off this morning at 11:30 mountain time, he'll go after some birdies on the long holes with a goal of going under par to hopefully secure a qualifying position.

"Much the same I've been doing, I need to birdie the par 5s," he said. "I'll stay conservative and try to get them when I can."

Mark Sheftic, a teaching professional from Merion Golf Club of Philadelphia, is the leader at 8 under.
