John Brown's raid anniversary events planned

Free events to mark the 150th anniversary of John Brown's raid are scheduled Tuesday in Hagerstown.

A 4 p.m., an outdoor concert is planned at University Plaza, immediately after an official unveiling of the new historic marker on the site where John Brown and his sons stayed in Hagerstown in 1859.

A 4 p.m. concert will feature songs based on the story of Brown, his friends and supporters. The concert will take place at University Plaza, near the square on West Washington Street.

At 7 p.m., historian Stephen Bockmiller will share the story behind the capture of Brown, Robert E. Lee and the U.S. Marines. The presentation will be at the Academy Theatre Banquet and Conference Center, 58 E. Washington St.

Jennie Avila will perform before Bockmiller.
