For some people, pets are like family. So it's no wonder when our cute companions are out and about, we often grab our cameras.

The Herald-Mail hosted the Picture Purrfect Pet Contest, where online users were asked to vote for their favorite pets. Voting was open from June 14 to 21, and 768 votes were cast online, according to Liz Thompson, Herald-Mail's digital director.

Mike Lichtenberg of Hagerstown won for Best of Show and took first place in the Look-A-Like category of him and his dog, Miss Purdy.

The entry, which was titled "Skins Fans," earned him $250.

Lichtenberg said his daughter-in-law, Kelly Karr, took the picture of him and Miss Purdy with Washington Redskins baseball caps.

He said it took awhile to get the shot.

"Animals aren't sometimes cooperative," he said.

Lichtenberg said his coworkers and truckers at Hoffman Transport in Greencastle, Pa., were excited for his win.

They're already planning on putting an article about his win in their in-house newsletter, Hoffman Gazette.

"I figure if it can keep some of these guys awake, then it'll be worth it," Lichtenberg said.
