CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Robert L. "Bob" Bowling, 83, of 765 Falling Spring Road in Chambersburg, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Nov. 9, 1925, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Nora Lizor Bowling.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Bob was a farmer for much of his life.

He retired in 1982 from the former Chambersburg Engineering Co., where he had worked as an overhead crane operator. He also drove a school bus for the Chambersburg Area School District.

He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Pa., and Hume-McNeil-Byers AMVETS Post 224. He also was a life member of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599.


Many may remember Bob for his favorite hobby of sitting on his lawn chair in his driveway, counting cars as they traveled up and down Falling Spring Road.

He is survived by his wife of more than 66 years, June Tolbert Bowling, whom he married Oct. 9, 1942; four daughters, Shirley (and husband, George) Shaffer, Bobbie (and husband, Bob) Lauver, Kay (and husband, Ted) Bowers, and Debby (and husband, Rich) Rosenberry, all of Chambersburg; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Eugene.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 29, 2009, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, with the Rev. John Rauch and the Rev. John Witmer officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, where members of VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside honors.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday one hour before services at the funeral home.
