Sarah Nicole Hurd, a 2004 graduate of Smithsburg High School, graduated magna cum laude from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, earning a bachelor of music degree in performance (oboe.)

During her time there, she was a student of James Gorton, co-principal oboist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and while in his studio became principal oboist of all major school ensembles and placed in several university competitions. She also was a performer in several masterclasses with oboists such as Louis Rosenblatt and Laila Storch.

Through a generous fellowship in addition to a graduate assistantship offer, Sarah will be continuing her musical education in the fall at Carnegie Mellon University, also in Pittsburgh, under the instruction of Scott Bell of the Pittsburgh Smyphony Orchestra.

QUEENS, N.Y. - Alexis Jade Miller graduated with honors from Saint John's University with a bachelor of science degree in clinical laboratory science and medical technology.


Lexi is pursuing a master's degree in pathology from Northeastern University, Boston, Mass., and plans to obtain a graduate certificate in medical management and public health.

Lexi attended Boonsboro High School and graduated with high honors in 2005.

She is the daughter of Jeff and Kim Miller of Boonsboro.

FREDERICK, Md. - Lauren Miller of Boonsboro has been named to the dean's list for her freshman year at Hood College.

Lauren received the distinction of a 3.71 overall grade-point average, ranking her 19th in her class.

She is majoring in management with a concentration in marketing.

Lauren attended Boonsboro High School and graduated in her junior year in 2008.

She is the daughter of Jeff and Kim Miller of Boonsboro.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - David Bowen has been named to the dean's commendation list for the spring semester at Gettysburg College.

He is a graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School.

He is the son of Denise and John Bowen.

STAUNTON, Va. - Hannah Reed Vargason of Sharpsburg graduated May 24 from Mary Baldwin College.

She graduated cum laude with a double major in economics and anthropology/sociology.

She is the daughter of Charles and Natoma Vargason.

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The following area students graduated May 17 from the University of Vermont:

Hunter Wade of Hagerstown received a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish.

Elizabeth Pruitt of Walkersville, Md., graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in history.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Kerry Elizabeth Krolak of Myersville, Md., received a bachelor of professional studies in fashion merchandising from Marist College at graduation May 23.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Christopher Heim, who just completed his second year at West Virginia University with a dual major in mechanical and aerospace engineering, was recognized with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship for earning a 4.0 grade-point average for the spring term.

He is a 2007 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

He is the son of Ed and Janet Heim of Hagerstown.

Allyn Saling of Smithsburg High School has signed with Presbyterian College in South Carolina to play Division I lacrosse on an athletic scholarship.

Allyn played attack for the Lady Leopards and led the team in scoring and assists her junior year and scoring her senior year.

Allyn scored 103 goals during her high school career; she was sidelined her freshman year due to a perforated appendix at the beginning of the season which kept her from playing.

Allyn served as captain her senior season and was All MVAL Honorable Mention 2008 and 2009 and All-County First Team 2008.

Allyn also played one year of club lacrosse with the Frederick (Md.) Stars.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Dustin Wayne Young graduated from Ursinus College with a bachelor of arts degree in business and economics, cum laude, during commencement exercises May 16.

While at Ursinus, Young was named to the dean's list and Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international honor society in economics. He participated in men's varsity soccer for four seasons. For three seasons, he was named to the starting lineup and to the Athletic Academic Honor Roll. He was a volunteer with Relay for Life.

Young studied abroad in Australia with Butler University's Institute for Study Abroad.

A graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School, Young is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Wayne Young of Greencastle, Pa.

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The following area residents have been named to the dean's list in the School of Business for the spring semester at Villanova University:

ERIE, Pa. - Michael P. Casper from Mount Airy, Md., was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

Michael is studying engineering.

SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton conferred 642 master's degrees and 35 doctoral degrees at its post-baccalaureate commencement ceremony in the Byron Recreation Complex.
