WILLIAMSPORT - Wilfred Willis "Willie" Cavender, 84, of Spielman Road in Williamsport, Md., died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at his home.

Born Nov. 19, 1924, in Brosius, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles Elmer and Bertha Camilia Messersmith Cavender.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was a combat engineer and helped build the bridge at Remagen.


He was the owner/operator of Bill's Auto Repair in Cortez, Colo., retiring in 1982.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Lou Bass and her husband, Gerald, of Hagerstown, Md.; three sisters, Ruth Moore, Faye Bowers and her husband, Virgil (Skip), and Mary Alice Bricker, all of Williamsport; one brother, Donald Cavender of Dargan, Md.; and one grandson, Bryan E. Bass and his wife, JoAnn, of Williamsport.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Giffin; and four brothers, Charles Cavender, Kenneth Cavender, Paul Cavender and Floyd Cavender.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 29, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, with the Rev. David R. Brosnan officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Sunday, June 28, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The funeral home will be open Sunday after 1 p.m. for the convenience of family and friends.
