SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Playing music that makes people get up and start dancing is the primary goal of the band Giants of Tiny Town. The band will perform Saturday at the annual Shepherdstown Street Fest.

Giants of Tiny Town plays a variety of genres covering funk, reggae, rhythmic rock and more. They play covers of songs by: Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson and others.

Drummer and singer Chris Crawford said Giants of Tiny Town is looking forward to the performance.

"The band is a really good, local band," Crawford said. "We wanted to put together a band that played really good dance music."

The Shepherdstown Street Fest is a one-day festival with music, food, children's activities and vendors on two blocks of German Street in downtown Shepherdstown. Other performers include the Sean Cookus Quartet, playing jazz; Forrest Brown's Dirty Little Secret; the Speakeasy Boys, playing bluegrass; and Too Many Daves, playing R&B, soul and rock.

Giants of Tiny Town originated in January based out of Shepherdstown. The name was picked to help the band on a promotional level.

"We knew it would be a great visual image that would stick with people," said Crawford said.

John Turner, Jeff Kauffman, Betty Jo Rockwell and Scott Rockwell will join Crawford on stage for Giants' performance. Many of the band's members have played at the festival before, but in different bands.

"We're really looking forward to it," Crawford said. "We take songs and twist them, adding on different rhythms like reggae. People in Shepherdstown like to dance, so it should be fun."

The band is set to play at 5:30 p.m. Crawford said he is pleased with their spot on the schedule because people will be settled in and ready to party.

"There will be a lot of people there to entertain and that's what we love to do," Crawford said.

Prior to the performance, the band plans to hang out with the community and then begin setup an hour before showtime.

"Around 4:30 p.m., we'll get our stuff set up and bring it on stage after the Speakeasy Boys performance and then it's go time," Crawford said.
