M. William "Bill" Dutton, Jr., 87, of Hickory Hill Road in Hagerstown, Md., passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 31, 1921, in Hagerstown, Bill was son of the late Dr. M. William and Zella Stickle Dutton.

Bill was a graduate of Virginia Tech with a degree in architectural engineering and was a registered architect in Maryland.

Bill served as an officer in the U.S. Navy Seabees in World War II in the Central Pacific Theater.

In 1957, Bill started The Blake Company, a building construction firm, and served as president until 1988. The firm completed projects in Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia.

Bill was a member of the Exchange Club, serving as Home Show chairman and president, and was a member of the Board of Trustees of Washington County Hospital and a board member of Home Federal Savings Bank.

He chaired and was responsible for the staging and facilities of the 200th Bicentennial Celebration and Pageant in Washington County.

He was a member and board member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, and served as a board member of Fountain Head Country Club and Palmetto Dunes Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

Bill and his wife made significant charitable gifts, often anonymously, to many local charities, including United Way of Washington County, Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex and Washington County Hospital. The Duttons also were the first major gift donors to the Community Foundation of Washington County.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Lease Dutton; two sons, R. Blake Dutton and his wife, Norah Dutton, of Rockville, Md., and B. Scott Dutton and his wife, Sheri Dutton, of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; and five grandsons, James M. Spickler, W. Blake Dutton, J. Quinn Dutton, L. Logan Dutton and B. Ryker Dutton.

He was preceded in death by one brother, B. Blake Dutton; and one daughter, Deborah Dutton Spickler.

Services will be Wednesday, July 1, at 2 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Richard H. Jewell officiating. Private interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
