Al Pomodoro chef to open own restaurant

SMITHSBURG -- One of the chefs at Hagerstown's Al Pomodoro Italian restaurant plans to open his own restaurant near Smithsburg later this summer.

Carmine Schiano Moriello will call his new restaurant "Carmine's Italian Restaurant," said his wife, Rhoda Schiano Moriello.

The restaurant will be in the space formerly occupied by Gabbys Bar & Grill in the Village Square Shopping Center on Jefferson Boulevard, just west of the intersection with Mapleville Road.

The space has been vacant since Gabbys closed last year.

The Schiano Moriellos already are working to prepare the site for their restaurant and hope to open in August, Rhoda said.

"We're just ready to strike out on our own and try a new venture," she said.

The Village Square Shopping Center site was ideal because the couple lives in Smithsburg, she said.

The restaurant will serve Italian fare similar to what Schiano Moriello cooks at Al Pomadoro, with the addition of pizza, Rhoda said.

"It's going to be more of a family restaurant," she said. "Al Pomodoro was more of, I guess, elegant dining."

A. Nader, owner of Al Pomodoro, said Schiano Moriello was one of two chefs at his restaurant and he is looking for someone to take his place.

Nader said he was sorry to lose Schiano Moriello.

"But since he is going to have his own business, I'm happy for him," he said.
