SMITHSBURG -- Raymond Wharton, 82, of Emily Way, Smithsburg, Md., passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at his home.

Born Jan. 5, 1927, in Astoria Long Island, N.Y., he was the son of the late Benjamin and Dorothy (Lambert) Wharton.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was employed by Jones Optician in Silver Spring, Md.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mildred "Millie" A. (Peterson) Wharton, whom he married Jan. 17, 1953; daughter, Millie (Wharton) Hovis and husband, Patrick, of Rockville, Md.; sons, Ray J. Wharton and wife, Lorraina, of Smithsburg and Robert R. Wharton of Smithsburg; and grandchildren, Cheri, Raymond, Matthew, Patrick, Lauren, Sam and Nikki.

Services will be Friday, June 26, 2009, at 5 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg with Pastor Patrick D. Grach officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service from 4 to 5 p.m. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
