$2.4 million contract awarded for new aircraft rescue firefighting station

The Washington County Commissioners voted Tuesday to award a $2.4 million contract for a new aircraft rescue firefighting station at Hagerstown Regional Airport to Building Systems Inc. of Hagerstown.

The project is getting 95 percent of its funding from the Federal Aviation Administration, 2.5 percent from the state and 2.5 percent from the county, purchasing agent Karen R. Luther said.

It will house the airport's two crash trucks and one of the county's mass casualty trailers, airport fire chief Phil Ridenour said. It also will include offices and dormitories for the personnel who staff the crash trucks from the 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. shift.

With a bid of $2,396,000, Building Systems Inc. was the lowest of 13 bidders for the project, other than one that was excluded due to an obvious error, Luther said.

The other bids were:

o R.A. Hill Inc. -- $2,590,000

o R.W. Warner Construction -- $2,559,333

o Rockwell Construction Co. Inc. -- $2,474,000

o GRC General Contractor Inc. -- $2,602,000

o Brechbill & Helman Construction Co. Inc. -- $2,471,500

o Morgan-Keller Inc. -- $2,649,000

o McCoy Brothers Inc. -- $2,760,000

Mills Road bridge replacement work should begin in two weeks

Work should start in about two weeks on a project to replace a bridge on Mills Road near Sharpsburg, Robert Slocum, deputy director of public works for Washington County, told the Washington County Commissioners Tuesday.

The project, designed to alleviate flooding on Mills Road, was moved up in the county's schedule so it will be completed before the county closes a portion of Harpers Ferry Road to rehabilitate a bridge over Antietam Creek, Slocum said. Mills Road will be part of the detour during the Harpers Ferry Road bridge work.

The commissioners voted Tuesday to award the $800,000 contract for the Mills Road bridge project to Conewago Enterprises Inc. of Hanover, Pa.

Conewago Enterprises was the lowest of nine bidders for the project. The other bidders were:

o C. William Hetzer Inc. -- $899,215

o Building Systems Inc. -- $942,399

o MRC Construction Corp. -- $947,631

o Concrete General -- $995,306

o Wastler Construction -- $996,701

o Callas Contractors -- $1,001,814.10

o Ross Contracting Inc. -- $1,015,323.30

o Ahern & Associates -- $1,069,000

Slocum said the Mills Road bridge project should take about 150 days.

"We are looking to get this job started promptly and get it wrapped up before the winter season," he said.
